Detailed Report
This years National Track and Field Championships were hosted by Lancashire Police at Stanley Park, Blackpool, and were held on a sunny day with some events effected by strong winds..
This years Championships saw a good turnout of competitors, including a number of first time attendees, including more Police Staff and Community Support Officers, than ever before. This saw a number of new champions, although no new records were set.
The organisation and hospitality of the Organising Committee was first class and the thanks of the Athletics Section and the Athletes go out to the Committee Members and of Lancashire Police
For the first time in a number of years there had to be heats in both men’s and woman’s sprints.
Men
100 Meters
This was a great race that saw a number of former champions competing against each other, with last year’s winner Chris CARSON (Fife 11.1) retaining the title from newcomer Paul WEBSTER (Northants 11.5) and previous winner Greg RICHARDS (West Mids.11.6)
200 Meters
Chris CARSON (22.9) made it a sprint double beating another newcomer Uddin SALAH (Met. 24.2) and Richard ANDERSON (Met. 24.4) third.
400 Meters
Paul CLARKE (Dyfed Powys. 50.9) ran a great race to retain his title again from another newcomer Mark GILMER (West Yorks. 52.0) and last years runner up Jayson RICHARDS (Hants 52.3) taking third place.
800 Metres
Richard VINT (Thames Valley.2.02.6) won a very close race from last year’s winner Paul CLARKE (2.03.0) and Simon NEWTON (West Yorks.2.21.3) third.
1500 Metres
Richard VINT (4:07.2) made it a middle distance double to retain his title from Harvey ROSE (West Mids. 4.28.4) and Stuart MAY (Thames Valley. 4.36.1)
5000 Metres
This saw a great race between newcomer Peter TUCKER (Met. 15:22.4) and previous winner Steve CAIRNS (Lothian & Boarders15.34.8) with the lead changing several times before Peter broke away to win the race. Simon LEES (West Mids. 16.26.7) stepped up distances to run a good race to get third place.
5000 Meters Veterans
Malcolm FOWLER (Cheshire. 16.06.4) ran a great race to beat last year’s winner Iain CAMPBELL (Met 16:11.2) with Ian WEATHERALL (Cheshire.16.15.1) third
110 Metres Hurdles
Another newcomer Tristan ANTHONY (Met. 14.7) ran a very fast time to win his first title from last year’s winner Ian MAWDESLEY (Met 18.9) and George DUNN (Met. 19.7) getting third place.
400 Metres Hurdles
George DUNN (Met 60.7) retained his title again from Jayson RICHARDS (62.3) and previous champion Kenny MORRISON (Strathclyde. 65.3) winning bronze.
3000 Metres Steeplechase
Steve CAIRNS (9.47.5) retained the title from Karl WEBSTER (Derbyshire. 10.41.0) and George DUNN (10.56.2) winning bronze.
3000 Metres Walk
Gary WITTON (Sussex. 14:52.4) retained his title from Amos SEDDON (Met. 16.56.6) and Martin SLEVIN (West Mids. 17.16.8)
Medley Relay
The Met retained their title from Essex and West Midlands.
High Jump
This saw last years winner Mark BEER (Derbyshire 1.80) retain his title from two former winners who tied for second place, John WIGGINS (Lancs 1.65) and Steve GILL (Northumbria 1.65), Steve who was competing in his 31st consecutive championships.
Long Jump
Mark BEER (6.05) retained his title from Richard HORNE (Met. 5.94) and John WIGGANS (Lancs. 5.59).
Triple Jump
Michael MCDONALD (PSNI. 12.88) won the event and retained his title, with John WIGGANS (12.29) coming second and Ibrahim OLABEJU (Met 11.43) third.
Pole Vault
Mark BEER (3.60) made it a triple by winning the title from Mark FLANNERY (Gloucestershire. 2.80) and Sam ELIKWU (Met 2.60) coming third.
Javelin
Tim PHILLIPS (Hampshire. 53.51) another newcomer tom the Championships won his first title from two other newcomers Chris BEARRYMAN (Met. 45.88) and Robert SMITH (Dyfed Powys. 45.80).
Discus
Simon FRICKER (Dorset. 42.48) won back the title he lost last year, with Ian MCMULLAN (PSNI. 37.51) second and Owen CLEMENTS (Essex. 28.83) third.
Hammer
Rob CARELESS (Derbyshire.55.88) won the event to retain his title from Ian MCMULLEN (37.81) and Geoff FULLWOOD (West Mids. 31.73) third.
Shot
Simon FRICKER (14.23) won the competition and retained his title, with Rob CARELESS (12.19) second and Ian MCMULLEN (11.01) third.
Women
100 Metres
Alyssa FULLELOVE (Strathclyde. 12.5) won a great race in her first Championships to beat last year’s winner Suzanne MCGOWAN (Strathclyde. 12.9) with another newcomer Rachael ARCHER (Northumbria. 13.1) third.
200 Meters
Alyssa FULLELOVE (25.8) made it a sprint double and won the title from Rachael ARCHER (26.7) with last year’s winner Suzanne MCGOWAN (27.0) third.
400 Metres
Erin LEGGATE (Strathclyde. 59.5) in her first Championships ran a great race to win the title from 2 more newcomers Deborah WILNE (Staffs. 70.9) and Kathy WINROW (Cumbria. 75.9).
800 Metres
Sally YOUDEN (Northumbria. 2:21.2) won the race to retain her title from Sarah BARR (Strathclyde. 2.38.0) and Sally CLEMENTS (Staffs. 2.45.9).
1500 Metres
Sarah SIMMONDS (Met.4.48.4) made a return to the Championships to win the title from Janine BROWN (BTP. 4.57.6) and Sharon MCHUGH (Met 5:14.3).
5000 Metres
Diane LAUDER (Lothian & Boarders. 18.38.4) won her first title in a very hard run race with Janine BROWN (18.43.1), with Jessica TURNBULL (Gloucs. 19.18.5) third
4 X 100 Metres Relay
STRATHCLYDE ran one of the fastest times recorded at a Police Championships to hosts LANCASHIRE and last years winners MET,
High Jump
Erin LEGGATE (1.65) won her second Championship of the day to beat last years winner Sharon WOOLRICH (Hampshire. 1.60) and Cheryl CROUCHER (Hampshire. 1.35).
Long Jump
Steph MORGAN (West Mids. 5.58) made it a winning return to the Championships after missing last year through having a baby, with Sharon WOOLRICH (5.24) coming second and Sally CLEMENTS (Staffs. 4.48) coming third.
Triple Jump
Steph MORGAN (11.15) made it a jumps double by beating last years champion Sharon WOOLRICH (10.33) and Jemma SOUTHALL (West Mids 8.32)..
Pole Vault
Hayley FOX (Lincs. 2.40) retained her title, from Jacqui REID (Met. 1.50) and Amy HARDMAN (Wilts. 1.40).
Javelin
Deborah COLLINSON (West Yorks. 37.55), another newcomer won her first title from Sharon WOOLRICH (27.44) and Kelly O’REILLLY (West Yorks. 20.69).
Discus
Claire CAMERON (Strathclyde. 37.47) reversed last years result to beat Nicola BAKER (Northumbria. 36.17) with Shirley QUINN (Essex. 30.07) third.
Shot
Deborah COLLINSON (11.63) won her second Championship of the day by beating last years winner Nicola BAKER (10.24) with Claire CAMERON (10.22) third..
Hammer
Claire CAMERON (31.17) retained her title from Sigrid HASTER (Met. 30.90) and Odette BUTSON (BTP 30.49).
Alyssa FULLELOVE won the Gilbert Kelland Shield.
Michael MCDONALD won the Steven GILLESPIE trophy.
